In Feb of 2022 I asked for a 3d printer for my birthday, I planned on making parts for my RC vehicles. In my research on that, I saw people printing automotive parts, which led to my realization that 3d printed parts could be much more than just toys.
Later that year I found myself forced into a stay at home dad with a homeschooled child, I found myself learning CAD for fun, and I found people selling prints online. 3D printing was still difficult, and slow. We had not gotten the fast printers that would come a couple of years later when Bambu Labs decided to jumpstart the revolution of 3D printing for everyone that forced all the 3D printer companies to step up their games too.
My first part for sale was a part that many BMW E28 owners have problems with, the panel that holds the light switches breaks, and I was no exception to that rule. Despite the fact that you can buy it new, I knew I could design a better/stronger part that was also cheaper, so I started that process. As of the beginning of 2025, when I am writing this, I am finishing up what I have told myself is the absolute final revision of that part. I have not sold enough to warrant all the time and parts printed, only to revise it and decide the new version is way better, so I can't in good faith sell the old version. This new version is the ultimate, no intelligent person would spend this much time to design a better part than mine unless they were learning CAD like I was, even then you would stop much sooner than I did because I'm an idiot. This final revision is stiffer than the factory part, tougher than the factory part, looks nearly identical to the factory part with the textured skin option, has thicker mounting points than the factory part, holds the switches better than the factory part, and it's cheaper than you can buy the factory part for. So I'm calling quits on more revisions, it's good to go, 15th version is the charm!
In this year of 2025 I will be upping my game to get more sales, I'm going to jump into this business way harder than in the past. I hope to be able to make you a part that helps you for decades to come, thanks for your patronage. If you need a specialized part, reach out to me so we can see what path we need to take to make it a reality.
